Alcohol can be an enjoyable part of sporting and non-sporting life and having a drink is often part of relaxing with friends, celebrating or commiserating.
However, when not controlled, drinking can cause a range of problems and evidence is growing that community-based sports clubs may contribute to alcohol problems by accepting and promoting excessive drinking and providing inappropriate role models for young people.
Developing an alcohol policy is an effective first step to managing alcohol in sporting clubs and reducing the risk and impact of alcohol-related harms in the community. This fact sheet looks at how a sporting club can develop and implement an effective alcohol policy.
